Kathy Reynolds and Dawn McKinley, two Cherokee Indian lesbians who were married under Cherokee law in Oklahoma last year, are now having a hard time arguing against a part of the Cherokee law that says marriage is between a man and a woman. How old is that part of the venerable sovereign law of our nation's original people? About one year. It was created as a reaction to this particular union. The language used to describe spouses in the Cherokee law has always translated as "cooker" and "companion," and made no mention of gender until now. The couple's marriage was initially challenged by some douchebag lawyer (also Cherokee) filing a complaint as a "private citizen." Maybe with a few more challenges and a few more modifications to the law, their marriage will have never happened!
