For once, it begins in the South
South Africa's highest court ruled today (with an overwhelming 9-1 majority) that the country's current marriage laws are unconstitutional for their exclusion of same-sex couples. It is now up the South African parliament to amend the marriage act, and they have one year to do so. Homosexuals are currently protected from other forms of discrimination by the post-apartheid South African constitution, and now South Africa should be taking another huge step for the continent towards civil equality. Hopefully this new development won't spark further repression in South Africa's notoriously antigay neighboring countries.
